Mitsuko Watanabe Collver

Died: Sunday, April 07, 2013
Mitsuko Watanabe Collver

Sept. 18, 1932 ~ April 7, 2013

Mitsuko Watanabe Collver, 80, died April 7 at her home in the Long Hill neighborhood of Stony Brook from complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

After earning a master’s degree in library science at the University of Michigan, Mitsi joined the staff of the Stony Brook University Library as a cataloger in 1969. Seeing a need to improve handling of publications that are acquired periodically by subscription, she conceived and built one of the first serials departments anywhere and served, first as head of Serials and eventually as head of Serials and Acquisitions. Her motto was, “Good technical service is good public service.” From 1996 until her retirement in 1999, she was in charge of Special Collections.

While Mitsi had many reasons to take pride in her professional work, she is probably more widely known for a Japanese-style garden called Mitsuko En, developed with her husband’s help in their own backyard. She always delighted in bringing cheer to her home, workplace, church and other places with flowers from her indoor and outdoor gardens, arranged in the traditional styles that she had learned in Japan.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Collver, and their daughter, Nona Marie, of Grand Rapids, Mich. Their first daughter, Nita Kimi, lived until 2002.

Interment will be at Eugene, Ore., which was their first home as newlyweds after she arrived from Kyoto, Japan, in 1955. A memorial service is to be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, 380 Nicolls Rd., East Setauket.
