Musical chairs at town hall

Brookhaven residents really do need a scorecard these days following a shake up at Town Hall precipitated by former Supervisor Brian Foley's resignation. Foley resigned as supervisor effective Dec. 31 after being elected last November to the state Senate.

The town's former deputy supervisor, Jim LaCarrubba, resigned as well in order to work for Foley in Albany. Lori Baldassare, formerly Foley's chief of staff, was appointed deputy supervisor by Foley just before he left. Baldassare therefore automatically became acting supervisor on Jan. 1. Thalia Bouklas, Foley's former director of research who was fired, after much legal and budget maneuvering by the Town Board's conservative majority, has been named the new chief of staff.

John Leonard, who was already deputy chief of staff, remains in his position and has already declared his intention to run against Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) for her seat in the fall.

At Tuesday's work session all three sat across the table from Councilman Tim Mazzei (R-Blue Point), who is running in the special election on March 31 for supervisor and, if elected, would promptly replace all three.
