The life of Sassy, a 10-year-old Holstein cow, came to a tragic end last Thursday night after she fell in the pasture, dislocated her pelvis and was euthanized, Friends of the Farm President Pam Veitch said.

The incident, known as a "split," is not common, said Veitch — who consulted with Bill Davenport — and one had not occurred at the farm within the past 60 years. Veitch said that she is grateful to neighbors who rallied to help the downed cow, and to Northport Village, which helped move the cow after its demise.

Speaking on behalf of Friends of the Farm, she said the group was willing to do whatever it took to save Sassy, but the cow was in a lot of pain and, due to her weight, suffered heavy injury due to the fall.

The accident was also a costly one for the organization which paid for the animal's removal and faces a substantial veterinary bill.

"That is why we do fundraising throughout the year," Veitch said.

Sassy had come to the farm as a rescue when she was a calf; she lived at the farm for the remainder of her life.

"It was a very emotional evening," Veitch said, adding that she and Linda Costa stayed with Sassy to the end. "It was very sad and there were a lot of tears. She will definitely be missed."
