Next, SBU president to be decided

One high-profile, higher education position filled, another making progress.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees announced Tuesday the selection of Nancy Zimpher, currently the president of the University of Cincinnati, as its new chancellor (as predicted online by TBR Newspapers, Feb. 3). Zimpher will begin June 1 to fill the Albany position that will have been vacant for 25 months.

Zimpher will make $545,400 annually in her new position, a figure the SUNY trustees came prepared to defend. A chart distributed at the event listed the top salaries of public university leaders, noting that more than 25 across the country are paid more.

Meanwhile, the search to replace retiring Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny is progressing well, according to Richard Nasti, chair of the SBU Presidential Search Committee and the Stony Brook Council.

"We have gone through a great number of [curriculum vitae]'s," Nasti said Feb. 6. He described the process as "a recruitment game … finding people who can lead a major AAU university." Under Kenny's leadership SBU was admitted in 2001 to the prestigious Association of American Universities, which includes only 60 research-intensive U.S. institutions and two from Canada.

Nasti said the search committee is working to "winnow down the list," hopefully to about 20 names. Long interview sessions with the candidates have been held, Nasti said, and after narrowing the list a second round of interviews will be scheduled.

If all goes as planned, Nasti said he would like to see a list of candidates forwarded to the council in March, which would further reduce the list to two or three names to be sent to Albany for final selection.

"We would like to overlap with Shirley," said Nasti. Kenny's retirement after 15 years at SBU is scheduled for June 30. "With things going on in Washington and around the world," Nasti said, "we want [the new president] to hit the ground running."
