Jacoby lifts Huntington to 4-0 win
|
April 02, 2009 | 12:59 PM The John Walsh Era began last Friday afternoon with Samantha Jacoby hurling a no-hitter as the Huntington girls' softball team shutout visiting Copiague, 4-0.
Walsh, a longtime physical education teacher at the school, assumed the head coaching job this season after a very successful run at neighboring Walt Whitman. Every coach wants to win the first game of the season, and Walsh is no different, so he was a happy man. "The girls played well and made the plays they had to make," he said.
Jacoby, a junior who transferred to Huntington this school year, was nothing short of dynamite, striking out 16-of-22 batters and allowing only one base-runner. Ironically, Jacoby struck out that one runner, too, but a wild pitch prevented the out from being recorded.
Not only did Jacoby star on the mound, but at the plate, too, collecting a pair of doubles and driving in all four runs to pace the Blue Devil offense. Catcher Caitlin Ortiz and shortstop Allison Conlon each scored two runs.
The 12-player team looked impressive. Walsh was pleased that Huntington's fielding held up. "It's not always easy to make the plays when your pitcher is striking almost everyone out," he said.
Jacoby looked sharp on a crisp afternoon. She was also efficient, letting only two batters reach a 3-2 count. "She was dominant," Walsh said.
Walsh, who is assisted by Joe Felpo, is trying to turnaround Huntington, which finished with a 3-18 mark last spring. The program also features a new junior varsity coach in Todd Jamison.
Northport then shut down Huntington in their final nonleague game of the season on March 23. Three days later the Blue Devils opened the season with a tough 7-6 loss to Sayville. The team will travel to Eastport-South Manor on April 2 for a league game. Start time is 4 pm.
