April 02, 2009 | 02:07 PM After splitting against Le Moyne on March 22, the Stony Brook baseball team won four straight against Fordham and New York Tech, including a doubleheader sweep of NYT Bears on March 28.
Freshmen Tyler Johnson and Nick Tropeano each hurled complete game shutouts to lead the Seawolves (9-8). Johnson threw a three-hitter in the first game as Stony Brook took advantage of six New York Tech (4-15) errors for a 10-0 win. Tropeano then tossed a four-hitter to lead his team to a 6-0 win in the second game.
Stony Brook grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first game as senior Brian Witkowski drew a lead off walk in the first, moved to second on a passed ball and then came home when George Carroll's throw to stop a steal at third sailed into left field. The Seawolves then added four runs in the second without the benefit of a hit as the Bears committed four errors in the inning.
Stony Brook then put the game away in the third, striking for five runs. Junior Robert Dyer walked with one out and then moved to second on a single to left from junior Jeremy Nowak. Senior Keith Fier then drilled a run-scoring double to right to give the Seawolves a 6-0 lead. Senior Chad Rebecca then reached on an error by Bears' reliever Jon Costa, which also allowed Nowak to score.
Witkowski drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center before sophomore Nick Thode drilled an RBI single through the right side of the infield to put the Seawolves up 9-0. Sophomore Chad Marshall scored the final run on a Costa wild pitch.
Johnson, meanwhile, was in complete control as he struck out eight and walked just two in the seven-inning game.
Game two started off the same way, with the Seawolves jumping out to an early lead. Marshall reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to second on a single from junior Michael Stephan. He then moved to third on fly to center from Thode before coming home on a wild pitch from New York Tech starter Matt Doran.
Stony Brook pushed its lead to 2-0 in the second when freshman Pat Cantwell stole third and then came around to score when catcher Greg Gilroy's throw sailed into left field. The Seawolves added three runs in the fifth and scored the final run in the sixth.
Unfortunately, the Seawolves went down in the series finale against New York Tech that was postponed from Sunday to Monday. The team had 13 hits but it wasn't enough, as the Bears won, 6-3.
