The Comsewogue Warriors are in uncharted waters. After several years of playing doormat to the rest of League V, the Warriors find themselves in joint first place with a 3-1 league record thanks in part to a 2-1 win over visiting Huntington on April 2.

Junior Rich Kissane threw 85 pitches over seven innings striking out 10 Blue Devil batters while scattering seven base hits and walking three in earning the complete game victory. Huntington's Joe Rielly took the loss for the Blue Devils. As good as Kissane was for Comsewogue, Rielly was equal to the task, striking out six, walking two and yielding five hits.

The Warriors broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. With two outs Nick Calamia singled to deep center field. A Rielly wild pitch moved Calamia to second where he came around to score on a long single off the left-field wall by Greg Garabedian.

In the bottom of the fourth junior Anthony Sabatino gave the Warriors another run with a blast over the center-field wall. Sabatino connected with a 1-2 fast ball and deposited it some 335 feet beyond home plate giving Comsewogue a 2-0 lead. It was Sabatino's first home run in high school.

"I was just trying to get a hit," said Sabatino. "I was looking fast ball and he threw me a fast ball. I was a little surprised. At first I thought it was going to be a double or a triple."

Meanwhile, Kissane was dominating the Blue Devils. Other than a hiccup in the top of the fourth where he lost command of the plate he was eminently effective having allowed just one hit through the first three innings. But in the fourth the Blue Devils loaded the bases with two outs on a double and two walks. But Kissane reared back for something extra and fanned Ben Wirchin for the third out. Nineteen of his 85 pitches were thrown as Kissane labored in the fourth.

Huntington also put two runners on in the sixth to no avail as Kissane again found his reserve and struck out Rob Fiato to end the uprising. But Kissane's luck ran out in the seventh.

Wirchin led off with a ground single to left. Luis Lopez then doubled off the left-field wall putting runners on second and third with no one out. Kissane then retired Mike Taylor on a grounder to short, scoring Wirchin with the Blue Devils' only run and moving Lopez to third. Kissane received a bit of luck as Lopez was out trying to steal home on a missed suicide squeeze. The next batter, Danny Goldstein, singled sharply to center putting runners on first and second. But as he had the entire game Kissane reached back, found something extra and whiffed Nick Sammartano to end the game.

Huntington subsequently lost, 7-3, at Eastport-South Manor on April 7. The Blue Devils are now 1-4 in league play.
