An enveloping and misting rain couldn't dampen the Middle Country effort Thursday evening. Saving her best for last, literally, Middle Country junior Jessica Parker fired a free position shot past Miller Place goalie Lauren Altinok with 12 seconds remaining in regulation play to knot the score at 6-6. Then with only one second left in the subsequent overtime, Parker notched her second tally of the game, giving Middle Country a hard earned 7-6 win in an exciting girl's lacrosse nonleague game played at Newfield High School in Selden.

The win gives surprising Middle Country its third win in as many games to start the season. Last week Middle Country narrowly escaped Babylon with a double overtime 13-12 win and opened the 2009 season with an impressive 9-4 victory over East Hampton.

In addition to Parker's two timely scores, Shannon Coleman also had two goals for Middle Country. Jessica Kravitz, Krystal Scot and Jordyn Woltmann added one goal each for Middle Country. Taylor Reh and Janine Glass each notched two goals for the Panthers while Carissa Citro and Kate Killeen rounded out the scoring for Miller Place.

"We just came off another close win last Friday so we're used to it," acknowledged Middle Country head coach Lindsay Dunlap. "They know how to handle it. But we're still very young although they've matured and our defense is seasoned."

The Panthers had taken an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Reh at 24:47 and Glass at 21:05. But Middle Country rallied for three successive scores to take a 3-2 lead. Citro's tally at 6:37 tied the score at 3-3 before Middle Country regained the lead at 4-3 with 5:43 left the half.

Unfortunately Middle Country couldn't sustain the offensive momentum in the second half. Miller Place eventually took a 6-5 lead behind goals from Reh, Glass and Killeen as time apparently wound down in Middle Country.

Finally it was Parker taking advantage of a Miller Place penalty and converting a free position shot in the waning seconds and converting to send the game into overtime. Parker repeated her late game heroics by coming up big in the final seconds as she stroked the ball past Altinok for the winning goal with one tic on the clock.
