Warriors surge to 9-3 victory BOYS' LACROSSE
|
April 09, 2009 | 03:59 PM The Comsewogue Warriors made a close game look easier than it was with a flurry of fourth-quarter goals to pull away from visiting Smithtown East 9-3 on April 2. It was the first game of the season for Comsewogue. The Bulls had beaten Huntington in their first game.
In the first quarter, Smithtown East killed a one-minute penalty and junior Adam Hull hit a pipe, then forced a save from senior Cory Banwaree, making his first varsity start. After that Comsewogue had possession of the ball almost for the remainder of the quarter, until with three minutes to play Bulls junior defenseman Tom Freshour burst up the middle on a clear and buried the game's first goal. Thirty seconds later Comsewogue junior middie Tom Cleary answered for the home team with an unassisted dodge from
behind the cage.
Sophomore attackman Ryan Brunet gave the Warrior's their first lead when he took a feed from sophomore Connor Duddy and bounced a low shot into the back of the net.
Comsewogue senior Rich Carlson fed senior Kevin Seng, and then senior Alex Zomerfeld fed sophomore Dan Rodriguez to make it 4-1. The Bulls responded with an extra-man goal by sophomore Ryan Desimone from Hull to close the half at 4-2.
The third quarter was pivotal as the Bulls held the ball in the Comsewogue end for six consecutive minutes, circling the cage and firing shots that missed high or went wide or were knocked down by the Comsewogue zone or deflected by Banwaree. When the Warriors finally got the ball back, they settled down play to rest their defenders, then went for the jugular with a slick pass from Carlson to Brunet for a goal in tight. Desimone responded 50 seconds later for the Bulls to make it 5-3, and Banwaree robbed senior Nick Travers with nine seconds left to preserve the two-goal margin.
Brunet said, "After they had the ball for a long time, we got it back, held it a while, then put it in the net."
Smithtown East head coach Jason Lambert said, "Actually I was relieved we were able to possess the ball in the third quarter. In the first half, we barely had it at all. It was disappointing not to score during that stretch because the game was still close."
Banwaree said, "Those six minutes were stressful but our defense did its job."
In the fourth quarter the Warriors broke the game open on unanswered goals by Cleary, Carlson, Seng and Rodriguez for a 9-3 Comsewogue win.
Lambert said, "Comsewogue did a good job today, and we made a ton of errors. Not sliding to the body, turnovers. We have a lot of work to do. Their goalie played great and we didn't finish. You play that much defense and you pay."
"The intensity was there for us," said Comsewogue head coach Pete Mitchell. "We played as a team and were very unselfish. We're young this year. Dominic Infanzon and Danny Rodriguez are only sophomores. A guy like junior Alex Zomerfeld never comes off the field for us and he never gets enough credit."
Brunet agreed with his coach: "It was a good team effort. We work the ball and everybody moves and we don't have selfish players."
On Tuesday night, Comsewogue won an overtime thriller, 11-10, at home to Manhasset.
