Commack pipeline to be tested
|
May 04, 2009 | 12:30 PM Iroquois Gas personnel will be conducting a "safety and reliability procedure" at the their South Commack Meter Station on New Highway in Commack May 4 and 5, the company said in an April 22 letter to Smithtown Town officials. While the procedure may cause residents in the area to smell gas or hear "depressurization" noises, local gas distribution services will not be affected, the firm said.
A "smart pig" computerized device is being transported through the pipeline from Millford, CT to the South Commack facility, according to Iroquois. Once there, the smart pig will be extricated from the pipeline in a procedure that requires depressurization of the receiver barrels; during the process, "a small amount" of natural gas may be released into the atmosphere, the firm said. The gas release would only last five to 10 minutes, although total work at the Commack facility may last for several hours.
"This procedure has been conducted several times in the past and is part of our routine operations," the company stated.
The smart pig collects data on the "integrity" of the pipeline, the firm said. Work schedule updates will be posted at the Iroquois website, www.iroquois.com.
