Four swine flu cases in Suffolk County executive cautions people against panic
|
May 04, 2009 | 04:53 PM Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Health Services Commissioner Humayun Chaudhry announced today that the four probable cases of Influenza H1N1 virus in Suffolk County have been confirmed as positive by the New York State Department of Health. This confirmation has been authorized by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The four confirmed cases include three students who attend the John F. Kennedy Intermediate School in Deer Park, and a man from Holbrook who works at St. Francis Prep High School in Queens. None of the cases are related to each other and none of the affected individuals have been hospitalized. All are expected to fully recover at home.
"This new information does not change our recommendations to the public," said Levy. "Residents in Deer Park and Suffolk County should not panic in light of this confirmation, but they should be aware of what is happening and continue to take common-sense preventive measures."
Dr. Chaudhry added, "This does not change our protocol. We are still advising residents who have acute respiratory illness to visit their doctors. We continue to consult daily with local school superintendents and area hospitals and physicians, as well as the New York State Department of Health. No new guidance is being issued to the Deer Park Union Free School District."
On Sunday, Suffolk activated its Emergency Operations Center as directed by the county executive. The EOC will be staffed until 9 pm today and from 9 am to 5 pm over the next several days to facilitate communications and coordination among government agencies and to answer questions from government representatives. The EOC telephone number is 631-852-4900.
Residents with questions or concerns are asked to call the Suffolk County Department of Health Services' Division of Public Health at 631-853-3055, during the hours of 9 am to 8 pm today or tomorrow.
