No sign of celebrities at Sassafras
May 15, 2009 | 11:26 AM
Although they have been spotted at the Stop & Shop in Oyster Bay and a nearby Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and their half dozen little ones are so far no-shows at the exclusive Sassafras estate in Lloyd Neck, which they purportedly planned on renting while Jolie is at work on a film shoot in Manhattan and on Long Island.

Rumors persist that the celebrity couple, whose faces appear on nearly every gossip tabloid cover, are living in media magnate Rupert Murdoch's Centre Island mansion.

Ann Vessalico, village clerk of Centre Island, would neither confirm nor deny the buzz, however.

Judy White, a spokeswoman for the Village of Lloyd Harbor, said she, too, is having difficulty assessing the whereabouts of the glamorous duo. She has heard that they are living in Centre Island, she said, but also that they are either renovating the 22-room, 47-acre Sassafras estate or building a new home nearby.

Pitt and the children had accompanied Jolie to New York while she films "Salt," a Columbia Pictures espionage thriller.

Originally called "Edwin A. Salt" and slated to star Tom Cruise, the script was reworked to accommodate the new female lead. Liev Schrieber co-stars.

Principal shooting started in late winter, with locations in New York City, Grumman Aerospace in Old Bethpage and various Nassau County locales.

Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Neck), who lives just down the road from the Sassafras estate, had been ready to roll out the welcome mat, if not the red carpet, for his new neighbors.

"I keep bumping into people that say they see them," Cooper said. "At this point, I haven't seen them. … I don't have any direct knowledge myself. For a 'Branjelina' update, you'll have to go somewhere else."
