May 20, 2009 | 02:55 PM Lose the shoes, help prevent AIDS The Ward Melville varsity girls soccer team's Lose the Shoes barefoot soccer tournament will kick off from noon to 5 pm on Sunday, May 31 at the school on Old Town Road in East Setauket. The event is a fundraiser for Grassroot Soccer, an international nonprofit fighting against HIV/AIDS by training African professional soccer players and other local heros as health educators. Over 270,000 children and teens have graduated from the program in countries including Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. Over 90 high schools and colleges have raised over $150,000 hosting Lose the Shoes barefoot soccer events.

Memorial Day Parade
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, East Setauket Post 3054, and American Legion Post 417 will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25, in East Setauket. The units will step off at 11 am following a route along Main Street and Route 25A. Ceremonies honoring the nation's fallen war heroes will be held at the Village Green opposite Emma Clark Library prior to the parade and also at the Memorial Park on Route 25A at the conclusion, followed by free hot dogs, beer and soda at the VFW Post 3054 on Jones Street. Over 2,000 marchers are expected. A helicopter fly-over by the NYARNG will highlight the event.
Elementary breakfasts The Three Village Central School District is applying to the NYS Education Department for an exemption from serving breakfast in the five elementary schools based on lack of participation in the past. The three secondary schools will continue to have a breakfast program. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Three Village School District Child Nutrition office at 730-4505.
Kids fun nite Three Village SEPTA will present A Touch of Magic on Friday, May 29 from 5:30 to 8 pm at the Bates House (behind the Caroline Church) in Setauket. Magician, DJ, games, dancing, BBQ with hot dogs, burgers, pizza, soda and ice cream, face painting and a performance by Ivan from Ronjo's. $5 per person. Bike-Hike Trail opens The first portion of the Setauket-to-Port-Jefferson-Station Greenway will officially open on Saturday, May 30. This newly constructed "middle section" of the trail is 1.5 miles in length and 13 feet wide. The paved trail begins near the Long Island Rail Road overpass on Gnarled Hollow Road and ends to the east of Sheep Pasture Road in Setauket.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held from 11 am to noon at Old Town Road and Lynx Lane.
