Roller hockey team wins championships

The Ward Melville junior varsity roller hockey team recently won the 2009 High School Roller Hockey League of Long Island championships. The team came in first place during the season, which ran from October through March, after finishing with an 18-1-1 record. In the postseason action, Ward Melville went 5-1, defeating such teams as St. John's, Smithtown and Connetquot.

Members of the Ward Melville team include juniors Rich Hurley, Andy Levanti, Justin O'Hea, Mike Rothstein; sophomores Chris Fidotta, Chris Milvid, Steve Sendra, Troy Wegenaar; freshman Ryan Eybs; and eighth-grader Austin Marotto. The team is coached by John O'Rourk and Brian Wegenaar, with Dan Smith as the general manager.
