Car burns at high school
May 21, 2009 | 12:08 PM
Students at the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School were evacuated to the upper field as a precautionary measure by school staff last Thursday when a car in front of the school caught on fire, according to Port Jefferson Assistant Fire Chief Dave Williams.

No students or staff were in danger, school officials announced in a phone message to district families.

Williams was first on the scene, and said in an email that because the burning car was between two other vehicles, firefighters were "concerned over the exposure to those vehicles." The fire department "quickly extinguished" the fire "with minor damage to one of the exposed vehicles," Williams said. The cause of the fire "appeared electrical in nature," Williams said, however a spokesperson for Suffolk police said Tuesday the cause is still under investigation. Police have not released the name of the car's owner.

One fire engine and fire police were on the scene and Port Jefferson Code Enforcement assisted with traffic control.
