Seawolves open tourney today
|
May 21, 2009 | 12:16 PM The Stony Brook University baseball team celebrated senior day on May 16 with a 17-7 win over Maine in the first game of an America East doubleheader. The Seawolves then fell, 6-5, in an extra-inning game two thriller.
"The split was satisfying because it allowed us to make the [America East] tournament," said head coach Matt Senk. "It was a disappointing extra inning loss ... but the goal was to win at least two of the four games. If we split the weekend, that would guarantee us a spot in the tournament."
The Seawolves finish the regular season 29-21 overall and 14-10 in the America East. Stony Brook will be the No. 3 seed in next week's four-team double-elimination America East tournament. The Seawolves will open the tourney against No. 2 Albany on May 21.
"We are excited for the opportunity to defend our championship," Senk said. "I think that every tournament is wide open and this one as much as any of them. I feel confident that if we play our best we could repeat what we did a year ago."
Junior Robert Dyer went 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs. It was the third two-home run game of the season for Dyer, who has a team-high 14 home runs. Sophomore Stephen Marino went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in game one, while sophomore Nick Thode added three hits and two RBIs. Senior Jonathan Kalkau picked up the game one victory for the Seawolves as he hurled 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the Seawolves honored their eight seniors: Marc Brown, Mike Errigo, Keith Fier, Kalkau, Steven Mazzurco, Chad Rebecca,
Michael Tansey and Brian Witkowski.
Maine jumped to an early lead in game one, scoring a run in the first on an Ian Leisenheimer RBI groundout. But the Seawolves answered in the bottom of the first, striking for five runs. Dyer pushed Stony Brook's lead to 7-1 in the second, smashing a two-run shot to left-center. But the Black Bears rallied back for six runs in the third, tying the game on a Tony Patane three-run home run.
Stony Brook grabbed the lead for good in the fourth, scoring two runs. The Seawolves added two more runs in the fifth and put the game away with six runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Marino.
In game two, Stony Brook grabbed an early lead, scoring two runs in the second. Marino drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single before freshman Pat Cantwell drove in the second run of the frame with a fielder's choice.
Maine took the lead with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Patane two-run homer. But the Seawolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. They held that lead until the ninth when the Black Bears tied the game. Maine then scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on an RBI single from Billy Cather. Marino singled with one out in the bottom of the inning but Kevin Scanlan retired the next two Seawolves to secure the
victory for Maine.
