Three Stony Brook softball players were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association when they were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team last week.

Seniors Kelsi Fanelli and Marissa Fleury and junior Alyssa Struzenberg are three of the 26 members on the regional team. The three athletes are now eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America team. This is the first time since 2005 Stony Brook has placed anyone on the first team.

Fanelli, a first team All-America East selection this season, is one of six outfielders named to the team. The senior center fielder posted career-best numbers this season in batting average (.354), runs scored (43), doubles (12), RBIs (32), slugging percentage (.570) and steals (18-18). She finished her career as the school's leader in career runs (141) and steals (54) and ranks second in hits (215).

A second team selection last year, Fleury is one of two utility/non-pitcher selections on the 2009 team. A first team All-America East and All-Tournament selection, Fleury led the Seawolves with home runs this season. She posted career-best numbers in batting average (.362), runs scored (32), home runs (13), RBIs (41) and slugging percentage (.705). Her .337 career batting average ties her for eighth all time while ranking third in RBIs (129), home runs (32), doubles (40) and runs scored (111). She also became only the fourth player in school history to record 200 or more career hits (205).

Having joined Fleury on last year's second team, Struzenberg was named to the first team this year as one of the five pitchers. Also a first team All-America East selection, her ERA of 1.98 this season was a career low. Only a junior, she already ranks second all time in career wins (53) and strikeouts (598) and third in shutouts (15). Averaging nine strikeouts per seven innings this year, she ranked 19th in the NCAA this season.

A total of 264 players from 121 different institutions comprise the regional teams. A change this year is the announcement of just one team per region, although the team has the same number of members of the previous year's first and second teams combined. The change gives the regional representatives more leeway in presenting candidates for All-America selection.
