May 21, 2009 | 02:18 PM After finishing with a very successful 8-3 regular season record, the Middle Country boys' tennis team was very competitive at the divisional tournament, held May 8 and 9. "We had a pretty good season," said Middle County head coach Jamie Santiago.
The first doubles team, consisting of seniors Pat Grimaldi and Doug Kane, who were seeded eighth, were on fire at the tourney. They finished the regular season with a remarkable 8-1 record. In the first round, they defeated Sachem North 6-0, 6-1. Their momentum carried over against Mount Sinai, where they won 6-1, 5-7 and 7-5. Kane and Grimaldi lost to the number one seed in quarterfinal action.
Ryan Kostoff finished 9-2 in singles competition this season, but was knocked out in the second round. "He was our leader all season long," said Santiago. "Number one singles are the best kids on the team. It was more of an individual competition."
Greg Cartwright and Anthony Cannarizo formed the second doubles team. Although they lost to the number three team with scores of 6-4 and 7-6, Santiago was pleased with their efforts. "They played over their heads, exceptionally well," he said.
