May 22, 2009 | 10:06 AM Memorial Day is an important occasion. Perhaps since 9/11 and increasingly over the past six years, the honoring of our fallen heroes from past wars has become more immediate as individually and as a community we become aware of ever greater numbers of contemporary heroes who, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "gave the last full measure of devotion."
Such a show of respect dovetails with a community's show of pride in itself and gratitude to those other local heroes, whether firemen or scout leaders, church pastors or teachers, who serve at home through their chosen walks of life by protecting, guiding or teaching members of the community.
