Pink socks bring luck GIRLS' LAX
|
May 22, 2009 | 10:27 AM On senior day at Rocky Point on May 13 the girls' lacrosse team said farewell to five great players in high style. Racing out to a 14–3 lead at halftime, the Eagles, wearing bright pink socks, held on to win 18-6 over Smithtown West as Sara Davis, Aimee Capps, Abigail Ross, Ryan McGovern and Amanda Baron played their
final regular season games at home.
The pink socks have become a good luck charm since the Eagles wore them to support breast cancer awareness during their Manhasset win earlier in the season, according to temporarily injured junior middie Kaitlin Grodotzke. "We haven't lost since we started wearing them," she said. "So we keep wearing them."
"This senior class is special for me," said Rocky Point head coach Dan Spallina. "I started coaching the girls as eighth-graders on my first junior varsity team, and they are the first group I've seen go all the way through the program. It's sad for me in a way, but I'm proud they are all going on to play in college. That's really the mark of a great program. Colleges want our players."
The Eagle seniors gathered around Spallina and agreed. Ross said, "Rocky Point lacrosse is a great tradition to be a part of."
Capps said, "This has been my life and I wouldn't change a thing."
McGovern added, "There's a special feeling on this team."
Davis said, "Only we can stop us."
And Baron added, "We don't come out here and work hard every day for nothing."
Leading the offensive charge against the Bulls were junior middie Kara Mupo with five goals and Samantha Mazzeo with four goals and three assists. Sophomore goalie Julie Nolan turned aside six Smithtown West shots.
Smithtown West's Meg Erler worked hard from end to end, and scored two goals and added two assists for the Bulls. Maria Schweitzer, Sam Donaghy, Becky Matturro and Steph Dickson also scored goals for Smithtown West. Jess Figuccio played the first half in goal for the Bulls and made a save. Heather Towey made five second-half saves for the Bulls.
"It was tough for us today because we've already played three games this week and it's only Wednesday," Erler said. "We're exhausted, but I think we did OK considering the level of the competition. We have another big game coming up on Friday against Miller Place."
On May 15 the Bulls claimed that big game, a one-goal 16-15 thriller at home over the Miller Place Panthers. Dickson scored seven goals to lead Smithtown West (6-7) and keep their playoff hopes alive. Erler added four goals and five assists.
Smithtown West is seeded sixth in the postseason, which begins on May 27 for Class B teams. The Bulls will compete against No. 3 seed Hauppauge on the road. Action begins at 4 pm.
