In the 37-year history of this championship, Miller Place has won the badminton title 36 times. They were defeated in the finals last year. This year the Panthers won the Suffolk County girls' team championship at Half Hollow Hills East on May 14.

The team competed against Commack in the finals and won a tight 5-4 game. A team is victorious if they win five of the nine matches. "Our doubles teams are young and inexperienced," said Miller Place head coach Don Pranzo.

Miller Place athlete Lauren Garritano defeated Commack's Jill Murphy, 11-1, 13-11. It took three games for Miller Place's Amanda Christie to defeat Amanda Castellano. Miller Place's Amanda Feeley also went the distance to defeat Commack's Kristina Panteleo.

Ashley Bua and Bailey Kirkpatrick of Miller Place lost to Commack's Carly Fadiker and Kelly Hall in the first doubles match of the day, 15-10, 15-8. Miller Place's Liz Paturalski and Jocelyn Romonoski defeated Commack's Jenna Maggio and Lisa Williams, 8-15, 15-11, 15-5. "It was the turning point of the match," Pranzo said.

Miller Place's Haoyi Lin and Samantha Reichardt lost to Commack's Lauren Celantano and Jill Marfilio, 15-7, 12-15, 15-6.

Commack's Alessandra Napoli and Kelly Ann Newman also teamed up in doubles action. "They were very successful," said Commack head coach Brian Gasser. Napoli and Newman beat Miller Place's Nicole Iacona and Caterina Reed, 15-6, 15-6.

Despite falling 5-4, the Commack Cougars girls' badminton squad put forth a solid effort in the tournament. Up to this point, they have struggled against Miller Place. "It was an accomplishment," said Gasser. "My girls' doubles did the best for me."

Boys' championship finals
For the boys, Smithtown East finished the regular season with a 14-0 undefeated record to win the league. In the championship finals, they lost to Half Hollow Hills 6-3. This is the second consecutive Suffolk boys' team championship title for Hills.

"The Half Hollow Hills coach made a very strategic move by splitting her No. 1 doubles team," said Smithtown East head coach John Hart. "They both won as third and fourth seeded singles. That was the difference."

The No. 2 two doubles team from Smithtown East of Matt Keyes and Kevin Smith had a solid performance. Keyes and Smith defeated Half Hollow Hills' Josh Zachary and Adam Haikan, 15-10, 15-12.

The third East doubles team of Josh Schmid and Jason Carroll also won, 15-13, 9-15, 15-12. "This was a really tight match," said Hart.
