Warriors finish D-II in first-place tie with SWR
BOYS' LAX

The Comsewogue Warrior boys' lacrosse team is peaking at the right time, as the Suffolk County playoffs draw near. Kings Park arrived for the Warrior senior day fresh off a 1-goal win over Westhampton, but the youthful Kingsmen were unable to top the experienced honorees and their teammates. Junior midfielder Tom Cleary pounded home 4 goals and dished an assist to lead a balanced Comsewogue attack to a 10-2 Division II victory.

Junior all-purpose midfielder Alex Zomerfeld and senior attackman Rich Carlson added 2 goals each. Sophomore attackman Ryan Brunet and senior Kevin Seng each chipped in a goal and an assist. Comsewogue senior goalie Cory Banwaree stopped 6 shots.

Zomerfeld, whom Comsewogue head coach Pete Mitchell has called the best player in Suffolk County that nobody knows, was typically modest after the game, spreading the credit around.

"We controlled the face-offs and had the ball almost the whole game," Zomerfeld said. "Our defense was great, holding them to only 2 goals."

Comsewogue senior midfielder Danny Rodriguez employed a variety of moves to control the face-off X: the clamp, the rake-back, and several forward breaking moves to win 13 of 14 draws. "I think I lost one face-off where I jumped early," Rodriguez said. "I've been working hard on this with Josh Marksberry."

When Comsewogue has the ball in their sticks most of the time they are very tough to beat, especially on a rainy night at home. Their settled offense is clever and patient, featuring hard cuts and unselfish passing to the back pipe. Their hustling zone defense remains nasty, one of the stingiest in Suffolk.

Kings Park head coach Kevin Travis said, "This is a tough environment for a young team, a night game against a tough team. Pete Mitchell does a good job every year. We were almost even with them at the half and then we got sloppy. You can't do that against a team like Comsewogue, or any good team."

A tense 4-2 game at the half did indeed become a decisive 10-2 defeat for Kings Park as the Warrior offense revved-up and the defense shutout the Kingsmen in the second half. Kings Parks' goals in the first-half were tallied by junior attackmen Timmy Lawrence and Pat Lipari. Sophomore Eddie Greco made nine saves for the Kingsmen.

"When we play good defense, win face-offs and show patience on offense, we do fine," Mitchell said.

The Warriors finished the regular Division II season in a first-place tie with Shoreham-Wading River. Both teams had 11-2 records, with Comsewogue falling to the Wildcats and Rocky Point. Shoreham lost to Sayville and Kings Park.
