Krischer and Frank win division in doubles BOYS' TENNIS

May 22, 2009 | 04:35 PM For the first time ever, the Comsewogue boys' tennis team won the doubles tournament in the divisional championships. "One doubles team did all of the magic," Comsewogue head coach Harry Kingsley said.

(click for larger version) | | Junior Zack Krischer and senior Travis Frank, who received a bye in the first round, defeated Bayport 6-3, 6-1 and Sachem East 6-4, 6-2. They went on to beat Austin Castellano and Zack Kepes 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the finals, Krischer and Frank out-played Kevin Kim and Max Tcherevik for the title 7-6, 6-4. Tcherevik had a foot foul and double-faulted three times. "The first set was very close," Kingsley said.
Neighboring Middle Country also competed in the divisional tournament. After finishing with a very successful 8-3 regular season record, Middle Country was very competitive in the tourney. "We had a pretty good season," said Middle County head coach Jamie Santiago.
The first doubles team, consisting of seniors Pat Grimaldi and Doug Kane, who were seeded eighth, were on fire at the tourney. They finished the regular season with a remarkable 8-1 record. In the first round, they defeated Sachem North 6-0, 6-1. Their momentum carried over against Mount Sinai, where they won 6-1, 5-7, and 7-5. Kane and Grimaldi lost to the number one seed in quarterfinal action.
Ryan Kostoff finished 9-2 in singles competition this season, but was knocked out in the second round. "He was our leader all season long," said Santiago. "Number one singles are the best kids on the team. It was more of an individual competition."
