Looking for a job ... or an employee?
May 27, 2009 | 03:39 PM
This week after Memorial Day weekend seems like a gift of time. It's an extra week in beautiful May, making the summer seem longer. And the fact that Labor Day is late this year extends summertime even more. So this is a good catch-up week and I'll use it to tell you what's been happening behind the scenes at Times Beacon Record newspapers.

Losing one's job is an awful experience. But as a result of this economy, it's been an all too frequent occurrence, as employers have no choice but to lighten the expenses in order to keep their companies or organizations afloat. Our newspapers are trying to help. Anyone looking for a job is welcome to place a free Situation Wanted ad in our Classifieds section, which circulates in all seven of our papers from Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington on the west through Smithtown, the Three Villages, Port Jefferson, and Port Jeff Station to Mount Sinai, Miller Place and Rocky Point to Shoreham and Wading River to the east and Middle Country to the south..

We are running the following notice in our Classifieds:

WE WILL RUN YOUR LINE AD

AT NO CHARGE FOR 2 MONTHS

We go on to ask that ads be emailed to class@tbrnewspapers.com. Or you may fax the ads to 631-751-8592.

There is a limit of 30 words. We ask that you include your name, address and phone number in order for us to set up an account for you. This information will not be in your ad unless you wish it to be.

We feel that the hometown newspapers should do what we can to make connections between employers and employees. To whatever extent possible, the papers are here to serve the communities.

Here are some of the ads we have received:

And there are more. We encourage employers to read these ads and follow up with anyone who sounds interesting. We cannot vouch for anyone placing the ads, of course, but we can generally sing the praises of hiring someone who lives locally.

That person will most probably be known to someone in your organization, who can give an impression. Or you may know his or her previous employer and be able to follow up easily. People who work near their homes are highly motivated to stay in their jobs and generally share a more personal desire for their employer's business to succeed. And they can probably make it to work when it snows.

So if you are an employer looking for some help, check out our Situations Wanted in the Classifieds. And if you are looking for a job, let us help you get out the word. If we are successful at matchmaking, everyone, including the economy, wins.
