Commack High School junior Nicole Guidice has been selected to represent New York as a National Youth Correspondent at the 2009 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University in Washington, D.C..

Guidice, 16, has been chosen based on academic excellence and sincere interest in the field of journalism and media, according to a letter from Andrew Flagel, executive director of the conference. From July 12 to 17, the Commack student will join others from across the nation to attend a variety of special functions including a presentation on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club and a National Correspondents Gala with leaders of the journalism and media community. Upon successfully completing the conference, the students will receive a National Youth Correspondent Certificate of Merit and college credit from George Mason.

A film enthusiast with an average grade of 94, Guidice enjoys participating in film and journalism classes at school because, she said, "I like expressing my ideas and entertaining others." For the past four years, she has also attended summer programs at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, Guidice said, adding that she hopes to major in journalism or film production in college.

In addition to taking part in the various activities at the Washington conference, the Commack student said she also looks forward to interacting with the other youth correspondents.

"I enjoy working with others and hearing ideas and getting hands-on experience," she said. Having developed an interest in movies at an early age, Guidice's favorites include films by Tim Burton, the Pirates of the Caribbean series and animated films from Disney and Pixar.

"I'm very proud of her for being chosen," Laura Guidice said of her daughter. "I think she's very hardworking. She really cares about what she does, and she's very creative and sincere."
