Event features over 150 judged quilts, demonstrations, vendors and much more

While there are definitely signs that the economy is turning around, many are still hesitant to spend money on big ticket items, including vacations.

But, Long Island is blessed with a rich cultural life (museums, theaters, concerts, to name a few), outstanding restaurants, miles of magnificent beaches and lots of hobby related activities. So, planning a "staycation" instead of a vacation isn't really a hardship at all. You'll save a lot of money and support the local economy as well.

In keeping with that idea, consider that this weekend the Eastern Long Island Quilters Guild will be holding their annual show in Riverhead at Suffolk County Community College. The show will be open on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $7 per person, children under 12 are free. Parking is free and the buildings are wheelchair accessible.

The theme of the show is "Go Green for Mother Earth." The color green will be featured as well as special exhibits. Noted second vice president Dorothy Braunstein, "We have some very unique quilts this time — a lot of very nice art quilts. A lot of it is in green — green bags, quilts ... it's very different, very interesting."

The members' challenge involves making a "green" quilt incorporating recycled materials, some not normally associated with quilt making. Members were put "on their honor" not to buy anything new for the front of the quilt. At least five different items (in recognizable amounts) had to be included such as junk mail, plastic or paper bag, commercial packaging, used article of clothing, fabric selvedges, dryer lint, closures, old jewelry, parts of old toys and any other item which might otherwise have wound up in the trash.

The block challenge invites both members and non members to create a block on the theme "Go Green for a Better World."

The guild anticipates that approximately 150 judged quilts will be on display for the exhibit. The show, however, will include a lot more. There will be demonstrations of various techniques, a works in progress room and for those who need supplies or material, 20 vendors are scheduled. Since many of the vendors are not local, shoppers will have a chance to explore the offerings of shops far away without having to pay for the gas to visit. Many vendors will have show specials, another chance to save some money.

Featured at the show this year will be author and quilt artist Laurie Swim of Nova Scotia who will present an art quilt exhibit and lecture. At 1 pm each day she will discuss "The Joy of Quilting," showing many of her quilts, inspired by the Nova Scotia scenery.

This year's raffle features a queen-sized "Go Green Circle-Play" quilt made by guild members based on designs from Reynola Pakusich's book, "Circle Play." The drawing for the quilt and two other prizes will be held at the show on Sunday. The raffle helps support a scholarship fund at SCCC which allows the college to award a one-year scholarship to a student in the area of design each year.

In addition, noted Connie Klos, chapter corresponding secretary, a basket raffle will be held with the proceeds being donated to charity. The charity selected "follows the theme of the show each year." This year, following the theme of going green, proceeds from the raffle will go to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Education. While many baskets will feature sewing and quilting prizes, one will feature a package for a family for a day at the Riverhead Aquarium.
