Federal stimulus lights up the town

The town resolved at Tuesday's board meeting to accept up to $1.725 million in federal stimulus funding aimed at revitalizing the American economy while meeting long-term, clean energy and climate goals by driving technological innovation, stimulating investment and creating green jobs.

Jacob Goldman, of the town's Renewable Energy Task Force, said, "I just think it's wonderful that Huntington is able to get these funds and that we're going to use these funds for such a wonderful endeavor of saving us energy."

About half the money will go toward the town's street lighting project, he said. At a cost of $1.5 million a year, street lighting represents almost half of the town's electric bills.

"We're going to improve our lighting: the lighting is going to be better with the new lighting system. It's going to use less energy, it's going to cost less and it's going to have significant maintenance savings as well, because the new lighting lasts much longer than the old lighting."
