Harborfields rounds out year with three Rs
Reserves funds, readies for emergencies, renames stadium

Before getting down to the business of its three-year budget plan on Wednesday night, the Harborfields school board resolved to rename the athletic stadium at Harborfields High School the James. T. Brennan Memorial Stadium, effective June 28, in honor of the 18-year veteran of the board who died in April.

Then, the board made resolutions to add four separate reserve funds as part of a long-range financial planning goal.

The new funds would help pay for unexpected expenses and meet future obligations, including large unemployment and retirement contributions, "which we're going to be hit with," Trustee Gary Schoer said.

Vice President Donald Mastroianni added, "These resolutions need to be taken before the end of the school year. That's why we're taking them at this time."

The four reserve allotments are: an unemployment fund of up to $60,000; a capital fund, up to $650,000; a retirement contribution fund, up to $1.15 million, and an employee benefit accrued liability fund, up to $1.7 million

Superintendent Frank Carasiti expressed additional concern about the district's preparedness in the event of a hurricane or other disaster emergency situation.

"I just think that we've been very lucky so far..." Carasiti said. "Maybe we ought to try to get together with these agencies … and try to get a generator or two which would make our schools a viable option for our residents. Personally I feel strongly about this, and I think we probably owe it to our residents. … There is money out there, the county has money; the federal government has money. We have to get generators … and the day is going to come when we're going to need them. "

The board then authorized Carasiti to contact the different emergency agencies to get that process going.
