Michael Koss was operating his 2004 Jeep Cherokee westbound on Route 25A, approximately a quarter-mile west of Gateway Drive in Wading River when he crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic and struck a 2000 Honda Civic.
The driver of the Honda, Edward Carr, 61, and his wife, Ilene Wasserman, 58, both of Setauket, were airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center where Carr was pronounced dead. Wasserman was in critical condition until Tuesday, when she, too, died, according to police.
Koss, 66, of Brightview Drive, Rocky Point, and his two passengers, Serena Koss, 60, of the same address, and Mary Lynch, 55, of Mount Sinai, were transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center where they were all in serious condition.
Seventh Squad detectives charged Michael Koss with driving while intoxicated; he will be arraigned in Central Islip at a later date.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS or Seventh Squad detectives at 852-8752.
Edward Carr was a psychology professor at Stony Brook University and a leading autism treatment researcher. He was named in 2006 to the Panel of Professional Advisors of the Autism Society of America, a national association dedicated to educating the public about autism.
He and Wasserman are survived by a son, Aaron.
