Teens charged with setting field on fire

Police on Friday arrested and charged two teenagers with setting fire to a high school football field in Centereach last month.

Arson Squad detectives, assisted by school authorities, allege that Matthew Gauck and Adam Heinz started a fire in the end zone on the artificial turf football field at Newfield High School on May 3, at approximately 2:50 am. The fire is estimated to have caused $35,000 worth of damage.

Gauck, 16, of Selden, is a Newfield High School student and Heinz, 18, of Centereach, is a graduate of the school.

Gauck and Heinz were charged with second-degree criminal mischief. They were held overnight at the Sixth Precinct for arraignment in Central Islip on June 20.
