Shakespeare comes to Long Island this summer SCCC and Vanderbilt Museum bring timeless works to local audiences
|
July 02, 2009 | 10:32 AM The works may be in the neighborhood of 400 years old, but the Bard's plays have stood the test of time. With universal themes, characters and situations, people return again and again to see Shakespeare's plays performed.
Long Island Shakespeare Festival
The Long Island Shakespeare Festival will be held at Suffolk County Community College, Ammerman Campus, Selden, from July 3 through 19. The festival will present free performances of the Shakespearean comedy "Much Ado About Nothing." The comedy, set in Sicily, revolves around a couple who pass the time before their wedding by planning to trick their friends.
The abridged performance will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 2 pm on the east lawn of the Islip Arts Building. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic and blanket or chairs for seating. In case of inclement weather, performances will be held in the Shea Theater.
To add to the authenticity of the performances, appearances will be made by greyhounds from the greyhound rescue group, Grateful Greyhounds. Shakespeare mentions greyhounds, a breed of dog associated with the aristocracy in medieval times, in a number of his plays.

The "Complete Works of Wilm Shkspr," a parody of the Bard's plays, will be presented from July 31 through Aug. 30. Three actors string together bits and pieces of virtually all of Shakespeare's plays with comic results. Would you believe "Hamlet" in under a minute?

In addition, the museum will be holding its Independence Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5 from noon to 5 pm, rain or shine, both days.
