Edge-Carlson engagement
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. May, Jr. of Pauline, S.C., announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Leigh Edge of Pauline, S.C., to Jonathan E. Carlson of Greenville, S.C., son of Drs. Harold and Gabrielle Carlson of East Setauket.

A wedding is planned for October 24, at Philadelphia Baptist Church in South Carolina.

Jessica is a graduate of Woodruff High School and the University of South Carolina-Upstate. She currently works with the Spartanburg Herald-Journal as a retail account executive.

Jonathan, an East Setauket native, is a 1999 graduate of Ward Melville High School and a 2003 graduate of Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

He currently works as a TV reporter with WSPA - News Channel 7, the CBS affiliate in South Carolina. He is a former longtime writer and reporter for the Village Times Herald.

Endangered species
In recognition of Endangered Species Day, 1st grade Brownie Troop 2866 from Arrowhead Elementary worked on a research project. They each picked an endangered animal, researched it, found out where it lived and why it is endangered, whether by natural or human causes. Their research projects were placed on display in the Children's Room at the Emma Clark Library. Pictured are Anna Brun, Rebecca Fear and Emma Stevens.

Aston presents research at St. Lawrence
Jeffrey W. Aston, a recent graduate of St. Lawrence University in Canton, presented the results of his original research at the university's Festival of Science, on the subject "The Role of NO in Ischemic Brain Injury." He is a graduate of Ward Melville High School.

Doherty named to dean's list at Holy Cross
Kelly A. Doherty, daughter of Jim and Carol Doherty of Stony Brook, has been named to the dean's list at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. for the second semester. The fourth-year student is a political science major and spent a semester in Washington, D.C. on an internship.

SCAD dean's list
Stony Brook residents Rachel Allison Bristol and Caila Dorothy Brown, both graphic design majors seeking fine arts degrees at the School of Communication Arts, were named to the dean's list for the spring quarter at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. This recognition is awarded for a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Tessler named to dean's list at Albany
Andrew Tessler, a 2007 graduate of Mount Sinai High School, now of Stony Brook, has been named to the University at Albany's spring 2009 dean's list for outstanding academic achievement.
