Wet Paint Festival
Fifth annual outdoor event to be held in Setauket and Port Jefferson
July 09, 2009 | 10:54 AM
Since its inception in 2005 the annual Gallery North/Joseph Reboli Wet Paint Festival has become a much-anticipated event in the Three Village area. This year marks the fifth annual festival, held to benefit Gallery North.

As in the past, on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11 from 10 am to 5 pm expect to see over 50 artists out and about in the community painting scenes of interest. Stop by to watch and chat with them as they capture the local scenery on paper and canvas.

On Sunday, July 12, from noon to 5 pm, the artists' works will be on display at Gallery North, 90 North Country Road, Setauket. From 5:30 to 7:30 pm people are invited to bring a picnic to the gallery grounds, listen to live music and enjoy, and perhaps bid on, the paintings — some still wet — at the auction.

In past years, the artists taking part in the festival have been painting scenes in the Setauket and Stony Brook areas. This year, in addition to Setauket and Poquott, artists will be painting in the village of Port Jefferson as well. This is a particularly appropriate choice since Joseph Reboli was born in Port Jefferson (in 1945) and graduated from Port Jefferson High School, now Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

Another new aspect of the annual festival is the children's plein air workshop, being held on Saturday, July 11 from 10 am to 2 pm. Eileen Sanger, an accomplished plein air painter and founding member of the Long Island Plein Air Painters Society, will teach the workshop, giving children ages 10 and older the opportunity to enjoy painting outdoors as well. The children's finished paintings will hang on a clothesline outside of Gallery North on Sunday, June 12, during the auction of the paintings created during the Wet Paint Festival for all to see.

Reboli Red

Local artist and longtime supporter of Gallery North, Joe Reboli passed away in 2004. Some of his work will be on display at Gallery North during the wet paint festival, a festival named in his memory.

Noted John McKinney, "Joe Reboli … never strayed far from his roots, in his work or his life. The paintings he made and the friends he made mostly came out of this local soil, which he found rich with subjects and personal attachments … For most local people, the beauty of his work lies in his arresting vision of commonplace scenes we saw every day. His sense of place and light transformed them for us … Those of us — and there were many — who were lucky to call him friend were drawn by his dry humor and sunny personality … He possessed an uplifting outlook that's revealed in the light his paintings captured. I see Joe's unique spirit in everything he put on canvas."

Particularly exciting this year, noted Colleen Hanson, director of Gallery North is that "Gamblin Paints located in Portland, Ore. have made a special oil paint to commemorate this year's

festival."

Said Eileen Sanger, on the artists' advisory board of Gallery North, "I contacted Gamblin and asked them if they wanted to donate some art supplies (for the festival). He (Robert Gamblin) called and said he had a new red paint he wanted artists to try. He said he would put anything we wanted on the label. We all jumped up and said, 'Reboli Red.'"

Added Sanger, "When we got the call we were floored. It's so awesome! What a tribute. It's too bad that Joe's not around to see it."
