Suwasset Garden Club announces Street Garden plaque recipients
July 09, 2009 | 10:59 AM
Over the past few years, several local garden clubs have initiated a Street Garden Recognition Program. Noted Grace Ryan, publicity chair for the Suwasset Garden Club, "This is one of the things the garden club does to draw attention to the many lovely gardens that exist in Port Jefferson."

Street gardens are described as gardens of living plants which can be viewed from the street. Street gardens are not necessarily visible from the home of the gardener. Some street gardens accent street corners while others surround mailboxes or trees. Street gardens may contain bird baths, sculpture or even potted plants. The main criteria, besides being filled with living plants, is that the street garden be visible to passersby.

This year, the Suwasset Garden Club has awarded plaques to 30 gardeners in the Port Jefferson area for their beautiful street gardens. A total of 62 street gardens were entered in this year's program, which has grown over the years. The award reception was held at the Port Jefferson Village Center recently, with garden club members providing flowers and centerpieces.

Participants in this year's program (which is open to non-garden club members only in Port Jefferson and Belle Terre) include: Betty Ann Arink, *Ellen Boehm, Joe and Karen Booker, *Colleen Camoglino, *Bari and Chris Carley, *Anthony Chichi, Robert and Jane Collins, Nancy and John Connolly, Vanessa and Scott Dalton, Karen D'Auria, *Carmine Dell Aquila, Linda Sbarra Divaris, *Charlotte Duff, Frank and Lynda Edwards, Joe Erland, Denise and Dennis Eylers, Granville Fairchild, Angela Foster, Richard Fotiades, Teresa Ghosio, Bill and Valerie Godfrey, *William W.
