Funds for Suffolk employers
|
July 15, 2009 | 12:51 PM Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy urged area businesses to apply quickly for newly available state funds for employee skills training.
Known as Building Skills in New York State (BUSINYS), the program will award individual businesses with up to $50,000 in a single year, subject to funding availability. An applicant may not receive more than a BUSINYS program lifetime maximum of $100,000. This does not include grants received under other incumbent worker programs.
"With our economy slumping and unemployment rates hitting new highs across the country, people are having a hard time simply getting by, let alone receiving more training and salary increases," said Levy. "This program reflects an ongoing commitment by the county to stimulate economic growth and employee skills, even during these difficult economic times."
Levy pointed out that the funds, as a grant, do not have to be paid back to the state, as would be the case with a loan. Available funds are limited, however, and the county executive urged employers to submit funding applications quickly. The state has set a deadline of July 20 at 4 pm for applications to be received. Applications are available for download on the Workforce New York web site at http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workforcenypartners/fundingopps/BUSINYS%2038Q%206-03-09%20RFA%20%282%29.pdf .
