The Smithtown East (2-2) girls' basketball team came from behind in the second half to top the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats, 32-28, on July 8 at Centereach High School in a Town of Brookhaven League I matchup.

The Wildcats (2-2) ran out to an early 11-6 lead on sharp-shooting by junior forward Corrine Wiederkehr, and junior guards Michelle Gostic and Sarah Franck. Smithtown East started cold from the floor and hung around with defense and a trey from senior Laura Cohen.

Late in the half, the teams traded baskets as Franck set up Wiederkehr on a clever backdoor cut and sophomore guard Megan McEnroe nailed a jumper for the Bulls with 30 seconds left. Franck again fed Wiederkehr in the paint and the teams broke at the half with the Wildcats leading 15-12.

With 14 minutes left in regulation the Wildcats held a seven-point lead, and Wiederkehr and sophomore Chelsea Hughes owned the glass. A spinning baseline drive by Wiederkehr gave the Wildcats a 25-18 lead with 10 minutes to play. But the Bulls were now shooting better, and still hustling.

Smithtown trimmed the Wildcat lead to five as junior Amanda Correnton stole a pass and made a fast break layup. Cristina Cohen finished another Bulls fast break. Laura Cohen drilled a three on the run to give the Bulls their first lead with 7:45 left. Laura Cohen's next three gave the Bulls a 30-26 lead with six minutes to play. Cristina Cohen added two more with a layup. Hughes cut the lead to four with a final bucket for the Wildcats.

"It's the summer league, so it's kind of chaotic basketball," said Smithtown East junior varsity coach Tom Vulin, who stood in for varsity coach Ken Klee. "During the second half we switched defenses, and shut down some of their inside game, where their big girls were killing us. During our comeback we made a couple of threes in a row and forced a few key turnovers."

Cristina Cohen, who made those threes, said, "I knew we were down a few baskets. I just focused on the rim and really concentrated. I had open looks and I took them."

Laura Cohen said, "Then at the end of the game we had to slow it down and fight to hang on to the lead."

Wiederkehr, who also plays lacrosse and will run cross country this fall, remained upbeat about the Wildcats. She said, "We were missing three seniors tonight and some of our starters, but I thought we played pretty well."
