Mount Sinai beats Centereach
Girls' basketball

The three key seniors on the Mount Sinai girls' basketball team — forwards Emily Bongiorno and Sarah Shine and point guard Kelsey Lubin — stuck together when the team was young and struggling, and are now reaping the benefits.

Over the past three seasons Mustang head coach Kevin Walsh has developed a lineup ready to challenge for a Suffolk playoff spot this winter. On July 7 at Centereach High School in a Town of Brookhaven League II summer matchup, the much-improved Mustangs were on display as they built an 18-point lead over Centereach and held on for a seven-point, 32-25 win.

The Mustangs ran out to a 9-0 lead before Centereach got a layup and three-ball from Danielle Hamlen. Shine drove the lane for a basket with 15 seconds left in the first half to stretch the lead to 19-7 and Hamlen missed a long three at the buzzer.

Early in the second half, the Mustangs were dominant and the Cougars fell behind by a score of 28-10. Just when it seemed all the drama was over, Cougar point guard Amanda Schlee answered with a layup, then stole a pass and fed Jessica Destefano for an open jumper. Destefano made a free throw, and, after a Mustang basket, Hamlen nailed another three. The feisty Cougars kept the pressure on until they were down only 30-23 and diving for loose balls, hustling all over the court. After a Mustang turnover, Amanda D'Nofrio scored from inside for the Cougars to cut the lead to seven. But time ran out and the final score was a 32-25 Mustang win.

Bongiorno, who scored a dozen points for the winners, also plays volleyball. "It's exciting to be a senior on this team," she said. "I think we'll have a good season and it will be very sad to leave."

The Cougars were missing key personnel from their regular varsity lineup, including an All-Leaguer. But Centereach head coach Jamie Steigle wasn't making excuses or worried about the outcome. "It's summertime," he said. "But even down 18 points, our girls never gave up. That's the mentality we have at Centereach. We go hard until the clock reads 00:00. It's a good crew that we have."
