PJ drops doubleheader to Bayport FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
|
July 16, 2009 | 12:52 PM Port Jefferson was never able to kick-start their offense as the Bayport-Blue Point fastpitch softball team swept the Royals, 8-1, 6-2, in a doubleheader on July 13 at the Diamond in the Pines Sports Complex.
Amanda McKay took the win in game one yielding five hits while striking out six and walking one over seven innings. Diana Kloepfer won the nightcap, tossing a nifty four-hitter, fanning six and walking one in earning the complete game victory.
Two of Comsewogue's up and coming prospects pitched for the Royals Monday evening. Megan Zimbler was tagged with the loss in game one while Alex Dovicsak took the game two loss. However, Zimbler deserved better than she got. She went the distance, allowing nine hits while whiffing six and walking two. Two of the eight runs she surrendered were unearned. In the second game three of the six runs Dovicsak gave up were unearned. She allowed nine base hits, struck out one, walked one and hit three batters.
"Our bats weren't working in the first game and our defense was sloppy," said Port Jefferson coach Deb Brown. "We hit a little better in the second game, but the results were the same. But we did make some nice plays, the girls didn't give up and they had fun."
Bayport broke out on top in the first game with an unearned run in the top of the third then exploded for six runs in the fourth as the Phantoms combined a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch and six base hits, including a three-run home run to right field by Chelsea Connestro, to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Limited to three hits over the first five innings, Port Jefferson's offense finally came alive with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Michiko McGivney (3-3) tripled to left field then came home on Hope Reindl's bloop single to center field. But that was the extent of the Royal uprising as McKay got Renee Marchewka to fly out harmlessly to left.
The Phantoms added another unearned run in the seventh to extend their lead to 8-1 and the Royals went down without a whimper the bottom of the inning.
"Overall, our bats weren't really moving," Zimbler said. "Their pitcher knew where to put the ball. She worked the inside corners well. We hit well last week. I don't know why we couldn't hit today."
In the second game, Bayport got all the offense they would need in the top of the first as four singles and a Port Jefferson
error resulted in three Phantom runs.
Bayport added another unearned run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. An unearned run in the fifth and a run on three singles in the sixth gave the Phantoms a 6-0 lead.
Port Jefferson avoided a shutout with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. After Chelsea Tamuk grounded a single up the middle, Reindl reached on an error putting runners on second and third. Renee Marchewka followed by lacing an opposite field double down the right-field line scoring Tamuk and Reindl. But the Royals' rally was squashed as Kloepfer enticed Morgan Sakovich to pop out to second.
Despite appearing to gain some
momentum with their second sixth inning rally in two games, the Royals were retired in order in the seventh as Kloepfer finished with a flourish, striking out the final two Port Jefferson batters to earn the victory.
