Warriors fall to Pats GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL
|
July 16, 2009 | 01:06 PM The long evening of beach volleyball nearly caught up with the girls from Ward Melville. After destroying their first competition against Center Moriches, 3-0, to start the night, the Patriots were forced to rally from a one game deficit in their second game of the night to defeat Comsewogue 2-1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-22) in a Town of Brookhaven beach volleyball game played July 8 at the Centereach Pool Complex.
Comsewogue, who didn't play a match before taking on the Patriots, appeared ready to take advantage of the situation. "We were nervous going in because we know how good Ward Melville is," said Alicia Spinazzola. "This was a big step for us in not being blown out. They have some really great servers and I think we were a little overconfident going into the second game."
The early going against these two teams featured nine ties and five lead changes before the Warriors went up for good at 11-10.
Neither team demonstrated consistent serving until Brianna Fanti took over with the game tied at 10-10. Behind Fanti's serving, Comsewogue reeled off four consecutive points for a 14-10 lead. The Patriots never recovered. Although they trimmed Comsewogue's lead to two points at 14-12 and again at 15-13, that would be as close as they would come. With Spinazzola serving, the Warriors extended their lead to 20-13 then held off a late Patriots surge to take the first game 25-18.
A confident Comsewogue squad jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two before the Patriots regrouped and reeled off six straight points to go up 6-3. Then it was the Warriors turn to rally, eventually knotting the score at 7-7 and taking a two-point lead at 9-7. But it would be the last time the Warriors would hold the lead.
Becker was dominant with her line drive serves erasing Comsewogue's two-point cushion with an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead for Ward Melville. The Patriots outscored Comsewogue 10-7 down the stretch and won behind a decisive 25-16 score.
In the third and final game, the Warriors reasserted themselves and led for much of the contest. Any momentum the Patriots had garnered in their game two win seemed to have disappeared.
Both teams struggled with serving, and, as a result, the Warriors were able to jump ahead 20-16 on errors. But Ward Melville won five of the next six points to tie the game 21-21. Haley Blunt then went on a serving run and put her team back up, 24-21, before winning 25-22.
