Short fiction prize announced
|
The winner of the 2008 Stony Brook $1,000 Short Fiction Prize, Rebecca Power, had the opportunity to read her story, "Active Homing Guidance," during a special craft lecture by novelist Roger Rosenblatt and actor/director/writer Alan Alda at this summer's Southampton Writers Conference.
According to John Westermann, director of the prize and a lecturer in the MFA in Writing and Literature program at Stony Brook Southampton, the event, held July 17, was an excellent showcase for an emerging talent. Rosenblatt called Power "an exciting new voice."
"It was amazing to have them like my story," Power said. "The exposure to talented and successful novelists both in workshop and lecture formats not only taught me much about how to write, but also gave me the confidence and enthusiasm to continue writing." Power is a classical civilization major who edits the comedy magazine at Berkeley. "There is nothing more inspiring than being in a room full of people who love an art form and are succeeding in it. I was surprised and thrilled by the positive feedback given to me by Roger Rosenblatt and my fellow conference-goers."
The 2009 Stony Brook $1,000 Short Fiction Prize has just been awarded to Ryan Brown of Duke University for her story, "To Be Certain." Brown will receive $1,000 as well as a scholarship to the 2010 Southampton Writers Conference. Her story will be published on the prize website and will automatically be considered for publication in The Southampton Review.
Honorable Mentions for 2009 were written by: Christian Parsons, SUNY-Oswego; Jake Schindel, Dartmouth; and Anne M. Shepherd, Texas Tech University. The prize will begin accepting submissions for the 2010 competition on September 1.
