Come for the fun at the Greek Festival in PJ Family fun is just around the corner with Hellenic dancers, fireworks and more
|
August 20, 2009 | 10:50 AM It's that time of year again, time for the annual Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption in Port Jefferson. Come for the food which will be available. Come for the carnival rides and games — you and your kids will enjoy them. Come for the live music — to put you in the mood. Come for the fireworks — they'll be held on Friday and Saturday evening. Come for the dancers. Come for the shopping — vendors will be offering Greek art, jewelry, souvenirs, icons and much more. Come for the fun.
For those who love Greek food — and who doesn't — expect to find pita wraps, souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, pastitsio, spanakopita, as well as desserts such as baklava and cookies, dipped in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. Yes, hamburgers and hot dogs will be available, too.
The festival is particularly special this year as 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the church's founding.
The festival will take place Thursday, Aug. 20 from 5 to 10 pm (carnival rides, games and live music), Friday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 11 pm (carnival rides, games, live music and fireworks), Saturday, Aug. 22 from 1 to 11 pm (carnival rides, games, live music and fireworks) and Sunday, Aug. 23 from 1 to 10 pm (carnival rides, games and live music). The Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey will be appearing on Sunday as well.
One of the big attractions at the festival is the "fantastic" sweepstakes that the church holds. The drawing will be held on Sunday beginning at 5 pm. Prizes range from cars (a 2010 Mercedes-Benz and a 2009 Chevrolet — six in all) to a Greek vacation, TVs and other electronic devices, Craftsman tools, a spa package and more. Tickets for the sweepstakes are $100 each, limited to 3,999 tickets, meaning that one out of 15 will win one of the 270 prizes.
Admission to the festival is $2 per person, under 18 free. Free shuttle buses will take festival attendees from Ward Melville High School, Old Town Road, Setauket to the festival grounds, making parking at the popular event a breeze.
For further information and to purchase a raffle ticket in advance, go to www.kimisis.org or call the church at 473-0894 or 473-0829. Tickets for the raffle are also on sale at the church office.
