Well, maybe he — and many, many other beachgoers at West Meadow Beach Sunday — were just taking advantage of the low tide sand bar.

However it is not out of the question that he and many other bathers and sun worshipers were just a bit forlorn, despite the stretch of beautiful summer weather Long Island has been enjoying, that the Labor Day weekend, the traditional end to the summer season, had arrived. Tuesday brought the reality of back to work, back to school (one day later in Three Village) and cooler weather.

The spring of 2009 brought clouds and rain that just would not quit, turning the April showers into cool May showers and depressing June showers before finally loosening its grip on our skies and psyches.

But then came the wonderful summer of 2009 with its glorious sunny days, swimming, hiking, biking and backyarding through July and August. All in all, a terrific summer. And soon we have fall, perhaps the most enchanting season of all, to savor. Enjoy, Three Villagers.
