Country auction coming to Northport Historical Society fundraiser promises entertainment, intrigue and bargains
|
September 24, 2009 | 12:01 PM What is it about auctions that has always ignited our imaginations and set our hearts racing? Is it the chance to walk away with once-in-a-lifetime bargains? Is it the thrill of vying against others or watching others bid, with the outcome being determined by the laws of supply and demand?
The Northport Historical Society will bring back this kind of old-fashioned competitive fun when it hosts a country auction at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Main St., Northport Village on Saturday, Oct. 17. The event will include silent and Chinese auctions of themed baskets and other goodies as well as a live auction.
Setting the tone for the evening of nonstop entertainment will be a performance by Princess Peapod, a musical duo from Huntington who have been making waves islandwide with their distinctive "third millennium" folk music sound.
Highly renowned expert, author and lecturer, Dean Failey, senior vice president of Christie's in Manhattan, and senior director of their American furniture and decorative arts department, will be at the helm for the live auction of extraordinary items, including "nights on the town," tours, artwork, collectibles, and items of historical interest.
"He is a wonderful auctioneer and a lot of fun," fundraising chair Suzanne Cassidy said of Failey, who has appeared as a guest appraiser on the ever-popular Antiques Roadshow.
For those who have always dreamed of dining at Maroni's Cuisine, the exclusive Northport eatery known for creativity and legendary meatballs, there's a Chef's Tasting Lunch for two donated by owners Michael and Maria Maroni. Those who favor the arts can bid on a ticket package and a backstage tour from the John W. Engeman Theater.
Also coming under Failey's gavel will be the work of outstanding local photographers and artists, including Herb Knopp and Burt Reminick. A resplendent blue glass vase, hand-blown in Spain and donated by TAS Design and Craft, will also be up for grabs.
In terms of themed baskets, the one devoted to Northport history promises to be of great interest because of one particularly rare item, Cassidy said. The basket includes a copy of "Faded Laurels," resident Edward Carr's comprehensive account of the history of Eaton's Neck and Asharoken, a much-sought-after volume that has been out of print for years.
The basket also contains DVDs detailing the history of Main Street and Bayview Avenue as well as "A Taste of Northport," a compendium of favorite local recipes.
There will also be children's baskets brimming with toys and a Little Prince basket, commemorating the beloved classic written in Asharoken by Frenchman Antoine de Saint Exupéry during World War II.
Guests will have the opportunity to preview auction items from 6 to 7 pm. Princess Peapod will perform at 7 pm, with the live auction beginning shortly thereafter. Wine and cheese will be served.
Proceeds will benefit the Historical Society's museum which celebrates and preserves the history of Northport, East Northport, Fort Salonga, Asharoken and Eaton's Neck with exhibits and historic tours.
Tickets are $10 for members; $15 for nonmembers.
Due to limited seating, those who wish to attend should reserve tickets as soon as possible by calling 757-9859 or visiting the Northport Historical Society Museum at 215 Main St., Northport Village. Themed baskets and other auction items will be on display. Those interested in donating items, particularly antiques, collectibles and jewelry, should also contact the museum. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
