Huntington Station school vicinity gets more patrols
October 13, 2009 | 03:21 PM
As part of a multifaceted approach to crime-fighting and prevention in the Huntington Station area, county and town officials have arranged for the Suffolk County Police Department's mobile command center to park in the lot outside Jack Abrams Intermediate School Oct. 13 as well as another day later this week, according to Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Neck), who has been a key player in the effort.

The mobile command center will return to the area whenever it is available.

County Executive Steve Levy has also agreed to put two Marine Bureau patrol officers in a marked car in the vicinity of the school, a spokeswoman for Cooper's office said today.

In addition, officers from Narcotics Enforcement, the Patrol Special Operations Bureau and the Gang Suppression Team will be patrolling Huntington Station.

Cooper said he's grateful to Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Police Commissioner Richard Dormer for their leadership and commitment on this important issue, and he also thanked Legislator Lou D'Amaro (D-North Babylon) for his ongoing support.

Frank Stalzer, the Republican who is challenging Cooper to serve the 18th legislative district, said in a statement to this paper, "The community has been asking for a larger police presence in the area for months and now, three weeks before Election Day, we see a photo op and press release with Legislator Jon Cooper claiming credit for this. Give me a break! Maybe we should just hold elections every month so we can get our legislators to pay attention to our crime problem on a more regular basis, not just during election season."

Cooper has been active in meeting with school board officials this year and over the past few weeks, after a recent shooting outside the Abrams school, organized a community meeting for Tuesday, Oct. 20 to give residents a forum. The lawmaker plans on inviting elected officials from state, county and town governments, representatives from the Suffolk County Police Department's 2nd Precinct and members of the Huntington School District administration and school board.

The meeting is set to run from 7 to 9 pm in the auditorium of the Abrams School. Call Cooper's office at 854-4500.
