SWR prop passes
Upgrades to be made during school vacations
October 15, 2009 | 09:51 AM
Residents of the Shoreham-Wading River School District approved Wednesday a proposition to transfer $2.7 million in employee reserve funds to the district's repair reserve fund in order to make safety and sanitary improvements to two schools as well as bring them into compliance with federal accessibility requirements. The proposition passed by a vote of 1,215 to 791.

Superintendent Harriet Copel was pleased with the community support. "We're excited," said Copel, who was busy today contacting the architect and the state Education Department. She said some of the work would probably be done during the February and spring extended vacations with the balance to be completed over the summer before school reopens in September 2010.

In addition to the transferred funds, additional state EXCEL state aid will be used to pay the balance of the $3 million project, which represents the minimum upgrades mandated by the state. Funding for the construction will not come from the prior year's state aid, Copel said.

The buildings affected are the Middle School, which remains open on the basis of a temporary certificate of occupancy granted by the state pending the completion of those improvements, and Briarcliff Elementary School.
