Tornadoes shut down by defending state champions
October 14, 2009 | 03:37 PM
There are a lot of comparisons that can be made between last year's New York State boys' soccer champion Comsewogue Warriors and this year's team. Both teams lost a nonleague match to Newfield early in the season and both ran up perfect league records thereafter.

"They had a taste for it last year," said Comsewogue head coach Dan Costello. "Everything has to be done 100 percent. We have to do the basics to be perfect and that is what this team does."

Last Wednesday the Warriors clinched an early playoff berth with a dominating 4-0 win over visiting Harborfields to run their League V record to 7-0. Comsewogue is 7-1-1 overall. In addition to their season opening 2-1 loss to Newfield the Warriors tied Ward Melville 2-2 in the second game of the season. Since then they've been perfect.

They were dominant against Harborfields in recording their fourth shutout of the season. Seniors Keith Vigorito and Josh Butzke paced the Comsewogue offense with two goals and one assist each while goalies senior Kyle Dougherty and sophomore Chris Friedl (one save each) blanked the Tornadoes.

The Warriors fired off three shots on Harborfields goalie Noah Schacker (12 saves) in the first two minutes of play with Vigorito nearly scoring when his strike hit the left post. In all, the Warriors fired some 25 shots at the Harborfields net. Comsewogue's offensive prowess finally paid off when Vigorito headed a Butzke corner kick left of Schacker at 29:46 for a 1-0 Comsewogue lead.

Including his scores against the Tornadoes Vigorito now leads all of Suffolk County in scoring with 13 goals and seven assists. "We were able to put the ball in the back of the net," said Vigorito. "We had better ball movement and more shots on goal."

Butzke made it 2-0 at 7:50 when he struck a Vigorito rebound past Schacker. Then just 26 seconds later it was Vigorito again racing past the Harborfields defense, going in alone against Schacker and striking the ball over the goalie's head and into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

The Warriors continued its solid play in the second half. Less than seven minutes into the half Butzke notched his second goal of the game with a strike past Schacker to increase the Warriors lead to 4-0.

Harborfields finally got their first shot on goal late in the half as senior Tom Henriquez tested Dougherty to no avail. Even as the Warriors emptied their bench they continued to control the pace of the game.

"I thought we played tough and physical," said Harborfields head coach D.J. Greening. "But they were able to take advantage of our mistakes. I thought our goalie played extremely well but there are only so many shots that you can take."

Harborfields then defeated Islip, 1-0, on Oct. 9.
