Friedman's goal lifts Warriors over RP GIRLS SOCCER
|
October 29, 2009 | 03:03 PM Michaela Friedman's goal off her own rebound at 8:14 of the first half lifted the Comsewogue Warriors girls' soccer team to a 1-0 win over Rocky Point on Oct. 21 in a League V match. Islip, Hauppauge and Sayville are currently leading the league as the top teams with Comsewogue just behind. The Eagles, on the other hand, have struggled this season and have yet to win a game.
"You kind of feel for a team like Rocky Point," said Comsewogue head coach James Bentley. "Last year we had the kind of season they're having this year. Both teams had opportunities tonight. Victoria Kelman was excellent for us."
Neither team asserted themselves to start as most of the action was restricted to the midfield. In fact, Rocky Point had difficulty moving the ball into Comsewogue's territory.
Eventually, the Eagles were able to do so, leading Jessica Hassett and Caitlin Gargan downfield with long passes. The speed of Hassett and Gargan kept the Comsewogue defense on their toes yet failed to produce any shots. In fact, the Eagles managed but one shot on Comsewogue keeper Kim Comstock the
entire game.
Comsewogue maintained solid pressure on the Rocky Point defense and keeper Kelly Grossman (eight saves). Finally, the Warriors were rewarded when Friedman delivered a strike on Grossman that she couldn't contain and allowed the ball to come back out. Given a second chance, Friedman delivered, scoring her first goal of the year giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
"Taylor Fischer crossed the ball to me and I missed it and the goalie misplayed the ball back to me," Friedman said. "After that the goal was wide open and I just scored."
Friedman's goal stood up through the rest of the game. The Warriors maintained solid pressure throughout the second half but weren't able to penetrate the Rocky Point defense any further. Credit the Eagles for throwing up a solid defense. Down 1-0, they could have easily folded as they became frustrated, but they continued to work hard.
"It was as good as we've played all year," said Rocky Point head coach Joe Spallina. "I think we just ran out of gas. Our defense was very sound. Their goal was a miscommunication between the defense and our keeper and the ball went in. We've just been unlucky all season."
Comsewogue lost to Sayville, 1-0, on Oct. 24 and then three days later dropped a 3-0 decision to Hauppauge.
