Smithtown teen injured; motorcyclist charged with DWI

Fourth Squad Detectives are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a vehicle that may have been involved in a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a Smithtown woman on Halloween.

While a passenger on a motorcycle, Alyssa Bennett,16, fell off and was struck by a vehicle on Jericho Turnpike, which then fled westbound. Further investigation determined the vehicle could be a compact, dark-colored Honda or Mercedes with possible damage to the front end or hood.

Police previously arrested a Centereach man and charged him with driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a motor vehicle crash that injured his passenger early this morning.

Steven Schwamb was driving a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on Jericho Turnpike when he stopped at the light on Old Willets Path in Smithtown.

Schwamb, 19, claims that when the light turned green, he accelerated his motorcycle and his passenger, Alyssa Bennett, fell off. According to Schwamb, as Bennett was lying on the roadway, she was struck by an unknown vehicle driving westbound on Jericho Turnpike.

Bennett was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was treated for a broken leg and possible broken ribs.

Schwamb was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 31.

The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Fourth Squad at 854-8452 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.
