Three upsets for Democrats

November 03, 2009 | 01:05 PM Incumbents have been re-elected in all but three of our coverage area's races, as Republicans made one gain on Huntington Town Board, another in the Smithtown highway superintendent's office, and yet another in the 4th legislative district.
All Suffolk County Board of Election results, available at www.co.suffolk.ny.us/boe/eleres/09ge/ are unofficial as of press time.
Huntington Supervisor: Incumbent Frank Petrone (D) has fended off challengers Bill Dowler (R) and Peter Nichols (I) with about 52 percent of the vote.
Town Board: Incumbent Mark Cuthbertson (D) has won re-election with 14,606 votes, while challengers have bumped incumbent Stuart Besen (D) from a seat. Providing there is no contest of the results, Mark Mayoka (R) will sit on the Town Council come January after having garnered 14,467 votes. Eugene Cook (R) came in third place with 14,249 votes, and Besen fourth with 13,953.

Smithtown Supervisor: Incumbent Patrick Vecchio (R) has won re-election with about 60 percent of the vote; Patricia Biancaniello followed with about 39 percent and there was barely a showing for Deanna DeLieto trailed.
Town Board: Republicans Kevin Malloy and Thomas McCarthy have won election with 31 and 30 percent of the vote, respectively. In the five-way race for two open seats, Democrats Mark Mancini and Craig Tortora came in with 19 percent while Krystal Mallilo has less than 1 percent.
Town Clerk: Vincent Puleo (R) has 67 percent of the vote, beating Eileen Twible (D).
Highway Superintendent: An upset here, as Glenn Jorgensen's (R) triumphed over incumbent Dan Ryan (D) with 60 percent of the vote.

Brookhaven Supervisor: Incumbent Mark Lesko (D) has fended off a challenge from Martin Haley (R) with about 56 percent of the vote.
Town Board: No upsets here, as all the incumbents for the council district seats are nearly in the clear. They are Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld, Jane Bonner, Kathleen Walsh, Constance Kepert, Tim Mazzei and Keith Romaine.
Town Clerk: Patricia Eddington (D) beat Cecile Forte (R) with 50.98 percent of the vote.
Highway Superintendent: Incumbent John Rouse (D) has about 54 percent of the vote over Nicholas Caracappa (R), who has conceded. "I had A blast," Caracappa said. "This was a great learning experience. We're ready to go for next time." Asked if he would run again, Caracappa said, "In a heartbeat. We just didn't reach enough people." Not one to shrug off the 46 percent vote of confidence his first time running townwide, Caracappa thanked his supporters and added, "I congratulate John Rouse."

Suffolk County legislative districts:
4th: Thomas Muratore (R) was elected over incumbent Brian Beedenbender (D-Centereach) with 51.27 percent of the vote.
5th: Incumbent Vivian Viloria-Fisher (D) has won re-election over Peter Busacca (R) with 60 percent of the vote.
6th: Dan Losquadro (R) has defeated Bryan Lilly (D) with about 66 percent of the vote.
12th: John M. Kennedy Jr. (R) has won re-election with 75 percent of the vote, fending off Errol D. Toulon Jr. (D).
13th: Lynne Nowick (R) has won re-election with 75 percent of the vote, beating out Rachel Kerdman (D).
16th: Incumbent Steve Stern (D) has won re-election to a third term with about 52 percent of the vote over Matt Groh (R).
18th: Incumbent Jon Cooper (D) has won re-election to a fifth and final term with about 54 percent of the vote over Frank Stalzer (R).
