Countdown to free parking in Port Jeff
Nov. 15 begins 'off season' for PJ meters

If you like to gamble and are good at estimating percentages, you might be able to save some coin when you park in Port Jefferson.

Mayor Margot Garant this week confirmed she has directed code not to enforce metered parking when the lots are only about 30 percent filled. Garant said she issued the order — about 90 days ago — because "we need [code officers] to do other things" than ticket parked cars.

There will be no enforcement at all of metered parking during the "off season" from Nov. 15 through March 15, the Village Board voted last month. Reusable "free parking" signs will be purchased at $175 each to be posted over signage already in place at the entrances to all the metered lots during the four-month parking holiday, village trustees decided Monday.Countdown to free parking down Port.
